A stressful lifestyle causes high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, and compromises the immune system. It’s important to find the time to decompress every day. Escaping the pressuring demands of life is possible – even in the most hectic lifestyle. Hobbies are not just for people living an idle life; they play an important part in every healthy lifestyle. Enjoyable activities are important for stress relief and can actually aid the body in healing. Painting, reading, dancing, sewing, gardening, or simply sitting quietly with your eyes closed while listening to your favorite music are all excellent practices of self-expression and de-stressing.
Get a Hobby!
Most people think of a hobby as model car building, knitting, or stamp collecting. While those are all valid (and fun) hobbies they are not the only hobbies available.
Hobby: noun 1. An activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.
Any activity done regularly for the sake of pleasure can be considered a hobby. For example if you enjoy exercise, and do it regularly, then this would be your hobby. Individuals in high demand jobs may suffer from burnout. If your proverbial bucket is constantly getting emptied without being refilled, you eventually have nothing left in your bucket to give. Your focus and energy at work will decline, depression may set in, and ultimately your performance and relationships will suffer. One article we found explains how finding just 20 minutes in a week significantly improve your quality of life. This article noted the following:
“…enjoyable activities performed during leisure time were associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, waist circumference, and body mass index, and perceptions of better physical function. Such activities were also correlated with higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression and negative affect.”
“But I don’t have time …”
Life goes by in what seems like a blink of an eye. We find the time to fit in all sorts of activities in the course of a day. Find a hobby and make time for you. Just 20 minutes every week will make you feel better, think better, and be better.
